While the number of events on offer is more than you’d usually expect, it’s still significantly less than was offered to the console kids. Worse still, the events that did show some sense of originality for the genre – Equestrian,- Rhythmic Gymnastics, Diving – have all been omitted. Overall, Athens is woeful in design, execution and, above all, timing.

And as that bloke who landed groin-first on his vaulting pole will tell you, that’s a deadly combination. The Olympic Games are just around the corner, and soon, it’ll be hard to buy a soda that doesn’t have the Olympic logo plastered on its side. Gamers can’t escape this inevitable fate either as Athens has hit the store shelves, but unfortunately, it only gets a gold medal for mediocrity.

In truth, it may be a crapshoot trying to make a decent Olympics game simply because Olympic events are a different breed of competition from the sports games we’re used to.
